We often think about how technology has improved daily life. But, what about how it’s helped specific industries. In this piece, I have a look at the amazing ways that tech has improved in the police force.
Criminal Data Records
If you know a bit about the police force, you’ll know they rely on lots and lots of data. They need the data of every criminal in the country. When someone commits a crime, they get a criminal record. This record is then stored on a server somewhere. Way back when the police would store these records in filing cabinets. They used to be physical records. Then, they upgraded to digital records and could record and store more data. Now, technology has allowed all this data to be stored on remote servers. A police officer can access someone’s criminal records from any authorized computer in the country. Need to check if someone has prior convictions? No worries, it will only take a few seconds.
The improvements to data storage and cloud computing have allowed this to happen. And, the police benefit greatly.
Body Cameras
One of the biggest tech developments has been used to help police officers on the street. Street officers are usually the ones at risk. There’s no telling what could happen to someone that tries to arrest a criminal. A fight could break out of the felon could try running away. In years gone by, you’d have to trust that an officer was telling the truth when they recounted an event. Perhaps they struck someone and claimed to be provoked. Or, the criminal tried escaping and ran away. Either way, there was no evidence that what they said had happened. Now, police officers are equipped with body cameras. This device films everything from their point of view. You get to see, exactly, what went down. If a police officer behaves in a bad way, it will be on film, and their superiors can take action. Similarly, if criminals escape, the officer will have it on film, and it can be used to help identify the criminal and catch them.
Body cameras have made a huge improvement to the police force, and it’s all down to tech. Officers feel safer, and there’s less risk of them misbehaving and abusing their power.
Security Cameras
Staying on the topic of cameras, they’ve improved in other areas too. Security cameras are now far more high-tech than they were a few years ago. Who remembers all the grainy, black and white, CCTV footage that the police had to pour over? They’d spend hours trying to identify a pixelated face from an awful security camera. Nowadays, technology has improved greatly, and cameras are much clearer and better. It means the police can easily identify suspects, and it takes some strain out of their job.
If security cameras stayed as they were, it would be horrible for police officers. So, it’s a good job that technological advancements have allowed them to improve.
As you can see, tech has helped improve the police force in many ways. It’s certainly made a police officer’s job much easier and safer.
